Facing 11 other fillies in a 1-mile maiden special weight over Gulfstream Park’s turf course, World Tour was sent off as the second betting choice at 4-1. Hailing from the barn of Bill Mott, who has been having a tremendous meet at the South Florida track, the daughter of WinStar stallion Tourist broke from gate 9 under jockey Junior Alvarado.
Racing into mid-pack as the field entered the first turn, World Tour settled into fifth, rating well under Alvarado as the leader, Unshakable U, set a first quarter of 23.61. She maintained that position down the backstretch, and responded well as Alvarado angled her toward the outside. Entering the far turn off a half in 47.96, World Tour began to move up in between horses and it was clear Alvarado had plenty of horse rounding the turn.
Angled out again turning for home, World Tour responded well to Alvarado’s asking and shot forward like a bullet near the eighth pole, lengthening her stride to overtake Unshakable U and coast to a 1-length victory—Alvarado’s third win on the day. She completed the mile trip in 1:35.81, a nearly identical time to the 1-mile allowance on the grass for older fillies and mares three races later.
Purchased by WinStar for $130,000 at last year’s OBS April Sale, World Tour’s win gave sire Tourist his eighth winner of the year, and kicks off the filly’s career with $24,000 in earnings. Hailing from the same barn as WinStar Stablemates G1-winning Paris Lights, hopes are high for World Tour.
